JACOB MARX - Jacob MARX (Father: Philipp; Mother: Katharina Geisler) was baptized on 29 Jun 1805 at St. Johannes, Treis; His Godparents were Jacobus Brayon and Genovesa Groislers. He served in the Prussian army. He married Anna Gertrude SENGER, daughter of Carl Joseph SENGER and Maria Josepha NICOLAI, on 22 Nov 1831 at St. Johannes, Treis. He died on 19 Mar 1878 at Treis at age 72.

  1. Jacob MARX, born 21 Apr 1832 at Treis, Cochem, Rhineland; emigrated to NorthAmerica on May 9, 1857; married Margaretha BLESER.

  2. Maria Anna MARX was baptized on 25 Jun 1834; Her Godparents were Anna Maria Senger and Joannes Zilles. She died on 21 Dec 1836 at Liesenfeld at age 2.

  3. Philipp MARX was born on 11 Jul 1836 at Treis. He died on 30 Nov 1837 at Treis at age 1.

  4. Maria Anna MARX, baptized 27 May 1839 at St. Johannes, Treis; married Andreas CLEMENT.

  5. Philip MARX was baptized on 25 Jul 1841 at St. Johannes, Treis; his Godparents were Philip Marx and Anna Maria Bleser.

  6. Gertrude MARX was born on 7 May 1844 at Treis. She married Peter JUNGBLUT on 13 Aug 1878.

ANNA GERTRUDE SENGER - ANNA GERTRUDE SENGER (Father: Carl Joseph; Mother: Maria Josepha Nicolai) was baptized on 26 January 1809 in St. Johannes, Treis. Her Godparents were Anna Gertrud Senger and Matthias Castor. She married Jacob MARX, son of Philipp MARX and Katharina GREISLER, on 22 November 1831 in St. Johannes, Treis. She died on 12 September 1880 at age 71. JACOB MARX was baptized on 29 June 1805 in St. Johannes, Treis. His Godparents were Jacobus Brayon and Genovesa Groislers. He served in the Prussian army.   7. HEINRICH MARX was born on 20 August 1845 in Treis. He was baptized on 21 August 1845 in St. Johannes, Treis. His Godparents were Heinrich Casper and Maria Anna Schmitzer, virgin. He died on 24 April 1848 in Treis at age 2.
  8. CATHARINA MARX was born on 9 August 1849 in Treis. She was baptized on 11 August 1849 in St. Johannes, Treis. Her Godparents were Catharina Neef and Joes Senger.
  9. ELISABETH MARX was born on 9 June 1852 in Treis. She was baptized on 10 June 1852 in St. Johannes. Her Godparents were Elisabeth Tullius and Adolph Preus.

JACOB MARX - Jacob MARX (Father: Jacob; Mother: Anna Gertrude Senger; Gr: Philipp) was born on 21 Apr 1832 at Treis, Cochem, Rhineland; He served in the Prussian army and was given an honorable discharge. He left for America on May 9, 1857 and landed in Quebec. From there he went to Springfield, Ill. and was employed by the Blains Stone Quarry. Next he was employed by Spaulding Murray as a nurseryman and was a gardener. He is credited as the inventor of 'sodding', the practice of installing grown grass plots on ground.  He was next employed as a janitor in the Court House, a position he held for eighteen years. The last years prior to his retirement were spent in the Wabash shops. He met and was a friend of Abraham Lincoln. He married Margaretha BLESER on 22 Nov 1859 at Springfield, Illinois. He died on 25 Apr 1916 at Springfield, Illinois, at age 84.
Jacob had a vegetable garden and would sell his wares to Abraham Lincoln.  Mary Todd Lincoln would make Jacob go to their back door and she wouldn't pay Jacob.  Abe would come outside to pay him.  Jacob didn't like Mary.

MARGARETHA BLESER - Margaretha BLESER (Father: Joannes , Mother: Anna Maria DERFELD ) was baptized on 29 December 1838 in St. Johannes. Her Godparents were Margaretha Muller and Joannes Bleser. She married Jacob Marx on 22 November 1859 in Springfield, Illinois. She died on 22 March 1892 in Springfield, Illinois, at age 53. Information from her obit: Mrs. Margaret Marx, wife of Jacob Marx, age 52, died March 22, at 10:55 PM at her home at 1015 S. 12 St. Springfield. Born Treis-on-the-Mosel, Germany. Came to Springfield in 1857.m. Jacob Marx on November 22, 1859. One of the first members of Sacred Heart of Jesus church (mass was given in German and some German was used in the grade school.) Leaves husband and 7 children -- Mrs. Margaret Adam Layendecker, Mrs Veronica Jacob Layuendecker, Joseph, John, Thomas, Mrs. Catherine Henry Schmelter, and Pauline Marx of Springfield. Two brothers and two sisters - John Bleser and Mrs. Elizabeth Welk of Springfield, Joseph Bleser of Winchester and Miss Magdaline Bleser of Nazianz, Wisconsin. On Friday, March 25, 1892 funeral services for Mrs. Jacob Marx were held at 9:00 AM Sacred Heart of Jesus Rev. Father Kiekenberg officiating. Remains Calvary cemetery. Pall bearers were Matt Kramp, Joseph Claus, Joseph Hurley, Thomas Cooney and Mike Steel.

JOSEPH MARX - (Father: Jacob; Mother: Margaretha Bleser) Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Marx of 1323 E. Cook Street, will celebrate their golden anniversary.  On the day of the wedding, January 31, 1894 their attendants were, Joseph Ambs and Miss Katie Marx, sister of the groom . Mr. Marx was then with the H. W. Rokker Printing Company, and his bride was Miss Elizabeth Meicho, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Meicho of 1126 E. Reservoir Street. The rites were solemnized at 8:30 that morning in old Sacred Heart Church on South Twelfth Street. Rev. Father Krekenberg officiating. According to the newspaper account , a nuptial mass was sung by a quartet composed of George and Charles Groesch and Jacob and Adam Layendecker. The bride was prettily attired in a costume of brilliantine mohair, trimmed in lace and ribbons, and wore a wreath and veil and carried an ivory prayer book. The bridesmaid wore a cream -colored dress trimmed with ribbon. A large audience was in attendance. Following the ceremony, they're driven to the home of the groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Marx, where an elegant wedding breakfast was served. They will go to housekeeping immediately at 913 South 13th Street. Although they will not have their wedding attendants with them, as the latter have long since passed on, Mr. and Mrs. Marx are looking forward eagerly to next Sunday's 50th celebration as a real milestone in their long and happy wedding life. Their many friends will wish them much joy in the occasion.

ELIZABETH MEICHO - Elizabeth Meicho (Father: Ferdinand; Mother: Marie Albertine Lueck)  was raised as a Lutheran. Converted to Catholicism when she married Joseph Marx January 31, 1894.  They had 8 children.

  1. Raymond H. MARX was born on 6 Jan 1903 at Springfield, Illinois. He died on 28 Dec 1989 at  Springfield; Social Security #348-09-5620. He married Susan J. THOMPSON on 22 Jul 1922 at Springfield, Illinois. 

  2. John Joseph Marx born 1/12/1885, died 2/5/1975Married Lucy LOWDERMILK, born 3/7/1900. They had three children. (1. Robert Joseph Marx born 12/26/21. Died at the age of 2 of the "black' measles. 2. Frances Lucille Marx born 11/21/23.  She died of a brain tumor. 3. Harold George Marx born 1/21/26- Living.)

  3. William Jacob Marx born 10/25/1896, died Feb 18, 1954.  Married Elsie Eliza CREDIT Nov 27, 1919.  They had 6 Children. (1. Elsie Marx born 11/28/1920. Died 1998.  2.  Helen Marx born 3/28/1923. Living.  3. Roberta Marx born 12/19/1928. Living.  4. William Marx born 4/1/1933. Living.  5. Richard Marx born 3/20/1938. Living.  6. Dale Marx born 7/10/1942. Living.)

WILLIAM JACOB MARX - William Jacob Marx (Father: Joseph; Mother: Elizabeth Meicho) married Elsie Eliza Credit, daughter of Fred Credit of Canada and Martha Scholl of Springfield, IL, on Nov 27, 1919. They had 6 children. William served in WWI and was gassed by the German use of mustard gas. He survived and returned to St. Louis MO where he served as a Stereotyper on the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and soon was elected President of the Stereotypers Union. In 1951 he was treated for cancer in his leg and later was hospitalized with a brain tumor. He died Feb 18, 1954.

FERDINAND JULIUS MEICHO - Ferdinand Meicho married Marie Albertine Lueck abt 1862. They landed in New York in 1865 on the day President Abraham Lincoln's funeral was leaving for Springfield, Illinois. The train they were on had to follow the funeral train all the way and at each depot they would stop for a memorial service. Every depot was draped in black as was the train.

MARIE ALBERTINE LUECK - Marie Albertine Lueck married Ferdinand Julius Meicho abt 1862. She was born March 29, 1836 died Oct. 10, 1913

CARL JOSEPH SENGER

CARL JOSEPH SENGER (Christian) was baptized on 2 January 1766 in St. Johannes, Treis. His Godparents were Carlos Joseph Preus and Anna Maria Senger. He married Maria Josepha NICOLAI, daughter of Philipp NICOLAI and Maria Margaretha PUTZ, on 14 October 1794 in St. Johannes, Treis. He died on 28 July 1837 in Treis at age 71.

MARIA JOSEPHA NICOLAI - MARIA JOSEPHA was baptized on 7 November 1771 in St. Johannes, Treis. Her Godparents were Maria Josepha Kern and Joannes Nicolai. She died on 18 August 1824 in Treis at age 52.

FRED CREDIT (born as Liboire Edouard Alfred PELOQUIN dit CREDIT) - FRED CREDIT was born 9 May 1871 in Three Rivers Quebec, Ca.  His parents were Calixte PELOQUIN dit CREDIT and Marie COLLET dit BEAUSEJOUR. Fred's parents moved the family to Rhode Island about 1876 to seek work in the Textile Mills.  Fred married Martha Scholl, born 7 Aug 1872 in Springfield, IL on 26 Nov 1890.
Marx family history is that Fred Credit came to Springfield as a teenager and was known in the family as "the horse thief from Canada". This information would explain how/why Fred Credit came to be in Springfield, IL just a few years after showing up in the 1880 RI census.
