William served in WWI and was gassed by the German use of mustard gas. He also was shot in the head and survived. When he removed his helmet, it was dented from the bullet--it was a glancing blow. He survived and returned to St. Louis MO where he served as a Stereotyper on the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and soon was elected President of the Stereotypers Union. In 1951 he was treated for cancer in his leg and later was hospitalized with a brain tumor. He died Feb 18 1954.

WHEN WEDDING BELLS RANG FOR THE MARX COUPLE IN 1894

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Marx of 1323 E. Cook Street, will celebrate their golden anniversary next Sunday. Their attendants were, Joseph Ambs and Miss Katie Marx, sister of the groom on the day of the wedding, January 31, 1894. Mr. Marx was then with the H. W. Rokker Printing Company, and his bride was Miss Elizabeth Meicho, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Meicho of 1126 E. Reservoir Street. The rites were solemnized at 8:30 that morning in old Sacred Heart Church on South Twelfth Street. Rev. Father Krekenberg officiating. According to the newspaper account , a nuptial mass was sung by a quartet composed of George and Charles Groesch and Jacob and Adam Layendecker. The bride was prettily attired in a costume of brilliantine mohair, trimmed in lace and ribbons, and wore a wreath and veil and carried an ivory prayer book. The bridesmaid wore a cream -colored dress trimmed with ribbon. A large audience was in attendance. Following the ceremony, they're driven to the home of the groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Marx, where an elegant wedding breakfast was served. They will go to housekeeping immediately at 913 South 13th Street. Although they will not have their wedding attendants with them, as the latter have long since passed on, Mr. and Mrs. Marx are looking forward eagerly to next Sunday's 50th celebration as a real milestone in their long and happy wedding life. Their many friends will wish them much joy in the occasion.

Fred Credit appears in the 1920 census, 1890 Marriage License, and 1940 Death Certificate with the name Fred Credit, and the name Fred Credit, age 9, in the 1880 US Census for Woonsocket, RI along with his family. The census, marriage records, and death certificate note that Fred Credit was born in Three Rivers, Canada. Further investigation determined the male with name "Liboire Edouard Alfred PELOQUIN-CREDIT", with the same birthday and birthplace, was indeed Fred Credit. This information corresponds with the 1880 RI Census.

Marx family history is that Fred Credit came to Springfield as a teenager and was known in the family as "the horse thief from Canada". This information would explain how/why Fred Credit came to be in Springfield, IL just a few years after showing up in the 1880 RI census.

Jacob MARX (Jacob2, Philipp1) was born on 21 Apr 1832 at Treis, Cochem, Rhineland; He served in the Prussian army and was given an honorable discharge. He left for America on May 9, 1857 and landed in Quebec. From there he went to Springfield, Ill. and was employed by the Blains Stone Quarry. Next he was employed by Spaulding Murray as a nurseryman and was a gardener. He was next employed as a janitor in the Court House, a position he held for eighteen years. The last years prior to his retirement were spent in the Wabash shops. He met and was a friend of Abraham Lincoln. He married Margaret BLESER on 22 Nov 1859 at Springfield, Illinois. He died on 25 Apr 1916 at Springfield, Illinois, at age 84.

MARX, JACOB. - In reviewing a city like Springfield, located in the center of the fertile Middle States, it is astonishing how many of its most prosperous men are of German birth. Coming here when the city, and even the State, was in the throes of evolution, these frugal, industrious, well-trained Germans became excellent Americans, and to them is due much of the present prosperity. One of these representative German-Americans is Jacob Marx, now retired, residing in his own home at No. 1015 South Twelfth Street. He was born in Treis, Germany, April 22, 1832, being a son of Jacob and Gertrude (Sanger) Marx, farming people of Germany, who never left their native land. They had nine children, four of whom survive. The father served bravely as a German soldier.
Brought up in his native land Jacob Marx served for nearly a year in the German Army. His father was taken sick, and to enable him to take care of the farm and family, the king gave him an honorable discharge. He decided that there was more opportunity for him in America, so sailed on May 9, 1857, landing at Quebec, whence he came direct to Springfield and went to work in a stone quarry, where he remained for a number of years, in the employ of Blains Stone Quarry. For two years he was in the employ of Spaulding Murray as a nurseryman and following this, was a gardener for some years. Then for eighteen years he acted as janitor of the Court House. The next ten years were spent by him in the Wabash shops, but a few years ago he retired to enjoy a well-earned rest.

On November 22, 1859, Mr. Marx was united in marriage at Springfield, with Margaret Placer (sic Bleser), born in Germany, December 26, 1840. Her parents did not leave Germany, dying there. Mrs. Marx died March 22, 1892, having had fourteen children, six of whom survive: Margaret, wife of Adam Layendecker, of Springfield, she having died March 17, 1911; Joseph, foreman of the Schnepp & Barnes Printing Company; Veronica, wife of Jacob Layendecker; Catherine, wife of Henry Schmelter, a miner of Springfield; John, in the employ of the Illinois Watch Company; Pauline, at home, her father's housekeeper; Thomas, employed in the Wabash shops.
There are twenty-five grandchildren in the family. Mr. Marx owns his beautiful home, as well as other property in Springfield, and is in comfortable circumstances. He belongs to the Church of the Sacred Heart, being a devout Roman Catholic. In Politics he is a Democrat, but has never sought public honors. He is a stanch, loyal, true-hearted man, whose life has been spent in doing his duty, and he stands high in the estimation of his fellow men. Mr. Marx was personally acquainted with the great Abraham Lincoln.

Information from her obit: Mrs. Margaret Marx, wife of Jacob Marx, age 52, died March 22, at 10:55 PM at her home at 1015 S. 12 St. Springfield. Born Treis-on-the-Mosel, Germany. Came to Springfield in 1857.m. Jacob Marx on November 22, 1859. One of the first members of Sacred Heart of Jesus church (mass was given in German and some German was used in the grade school.) Ferdinand Julius Meicho Born March 29, 1836 died Oct. 10, 1913. He married Marie Albertine Lueck born Dec. 23, 1840 died June 6, 1927.

Ferdinand and Marie Meicho landed in New York the day President Abraham Lincoln's funeral was leaving for Springfield, Illinois. The train they were on had to follow the funeral train all the way and at each depot they would stop for a memorial service. Every depot was draped in black as was the train. That was in 1865.

William Meicho was Elizabeth Meicho Marx's brother who moved to Seattle, Washington probably in the 1920s. His grandson, Jim Meicho lives near Seattle.

The Meichos were Lutherans and Elizabeth Meicho Marx converted when she married our Grandfather who was Catholic.

Ferdinand married Marie Albertine LUECK about 1862.

SON OF FREDERICK AND FREDERICA LUECK
LUECK, HERMAN - One feature of Springfield that contributes towards its material prosperity is the location there of men of substance, who have retired from the activities of business, but are able, because of their leisure, to give more time and attention to civic affairs. One of the retired capitalists of this city is Herman Lueck, one of the German-American residents of Sangamon County. Mr. Lueck was born September 23, 1845, a native of Germany, where his parents were also born. He is a son of Frederick and Frederica (Seigan-Hanger) Lueck, the former born January 15, 1815. By trade the father was a tailor, and he came to America in 1867, locating in Baltimore, where he hoped to establish himself in his line of business, but, not finding conditions favorable, came to Springfield, which has since been his home. Although he is now ninety-five years of age, he enjoys good health and is one of the honored residents of the city. He served his regulation time in the German army, as did his son Herman.

Herman Lueck was educated in his native land and was taught the tailoring trade, at which he worked until the family emigration to America in 1867, and for a short time in Springfield. Then he obtained employment with the Wabash Railroad Company, and continued with them until his retirement. All his life he has been animated by a desire to do his full duty, and his efforts have been rewarded with more than the usual measure of success.

On June 9, 1876, Mr. Lueck was married, in Springfield, to Pauline Alexander, born in West Prussia, May 9, 1847. Her father came to America and direct to Springfield, where he resided until his death, in1909. The mother had passed away in Germany. Three children survive of the five born to Mr. and Mrs. Lueck; Arthur R.; Albert F., an electrician, and Josephine, wife of William Schnepp, a shoe merchant of Springfield. Mr. Lueck is a Democrat, but has not been willing to allow his name to be used on the party ticket. For many years he has been one of the liberal supporters of Trinity German Lutheran Church, and is highly esteemed in it, as he is throughout Sangamon County.
